Key Information you need to know

Implementation Date

Effective January 1, 2023, Michigan Medicaid began reimbursing for doula services provided to individuals covered by or eligible for Medicaid Insurance.

Doula Services

Doula services include personal support to birthing persons and families at any point during pregnancy and up to 12-months postpartum. This includes emotional and physical support, provided during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period.

Importance of Extended Care

Extending postpartum coverage addresses healthcare disparities by providing equitable access to all birthing people, aiming to improve health outcomes by reducing maternal mortality and morbidity rates.

Recommendation Required

Pursuant to federal regulations, doula services must be recommended by a licensed healthcare provider.
